SVQ's and Modern Apprenticeships

SQA ApprovedWhat is an SVQ?

Scottish Vocational Qualifications are based on standards of competence (National Occupational Standards) that describe a candidate’s ability to work in real conditions.  Having an SVQ is a guarantee that a learner is competent to the standard of that SVQ.  The National Occupational Standards (NOS) are developed by employers and other experts from within the industry and then the Sector Skills Council (SSC) takes ownership on behalf of the business and industry.  As part of the development process, an SSC will liaise with employers within the sector to ensure the qualification is current and valid.

What is a Modern Apprenticeship?

Modern Apprenticeships offer anyone between the age of 16 – 19 paid employment combined with the opportunity to train for jobs at craft, technician and management levels.  They are an exciting way of gaining skills and qualifications that will help you to start a career without having to study full time, and are available across a wide range of industries.

Apprenticeships are designed to help create a high calibre workforce and strengthen the training system in Scotland.

As a modern apprentice you will be employed from the very start of your training and will receive a wage from your employer.  You will then be given the opportunity to develop expertise and knowledge through on-the-job assessment, as well as gaining vital skills such as teamwork and problem solving.

What will the training consist of and what qualifications are available?

Although each MA Framework is specific to a particular industry or sector, they are all made up of three parts.

  • The occupational SVQ for the sector is the core of every framework.
  • Core Skills – Everyone regardless of their job need certain skills which help them to become a more flexible employee, able to adapt to constantly changing work Situations.  These skills are known as Core Skills and are:
  • Communication.
  • Working With Others.
  • Numeracy.
  • Information Technology.
  • Problem Solving.

Additional Component

To encourage employee’s development and broaden training, some Modern Apprenticeships also contain additional components that vary from industry to industry; they include additional units from other SVQ’s, industry specific qualifications, or academic qualifications such as higher national certificates and diplomas.
