Introduction
Training Initiatives (TIGERS) entered into a joint venture partnership in 2009 with Carillion Training Services (CTS) a part of Carillion plc. The deal was brokered by Scottish Enterprise (Skills Division) who believed both businesses would bring an innovative and best practice approach to the delivery and completions of Modern Apprenticeships for young persons.
TIGERS have an excellent track record of shaping and preparing young persons for the world of work through the “SDS” National Programme “Get Ready for Work” and achieving sustainability of employment by MA qualification. CTS have created a number of construction academies in England and Wales utilising a “Host Employer Model” whereby construction apprentices were guaranteed completion of Modern Apprenticeship framework regardless of work and cashflow.

During my time at TIGERS I gained lots of new experience, many new skills and improved on things I already knew.
I started in the Netherton Training Centre with a group of 15 including myself. Our trainer, Ryan Russell put our class off to a great start with ice-breakers and team building. This approach and Ryan's realistic approach really helped everyone to settle into the new environment.
We continued with course covering all of the CSCS Health and Safety work, National Work Safety Unit and Employability Skills. The days in the training room were structured and interesting, making the theory work easy to learn.
After finishing the course at Netherton I was given a placement at Great Gardens situated in Govanhill. While there I was given a taster of the horticulture trade and other skills such as manual handling and respect for the environment.
After the placement I was offered full time apprenticeship employment by Carillion Training Services, a joint venture between Training Initiatives and Carillion PLC. While there Ilearned various aspects of groundworkers. I learned to concrete and mono-block, Iwas also offered training in brick-laying, confined spaces and water hygiene.
I have now accepted an alternative joinery apprenticeship with West Dunbartonshire Council. I feel that the skills I have learned will continue to improve my overall performance at work and my knowledge of the construction industry.
