Jo Swinson Visits TIGERS and Carillion Training Centre in Bishopbriggs

In the run up to National Apprenticeship Week (March 9 to 15), Jo Swinson MP for East Dunbartonshire, visited construction apprentices at the Carillion training centre in Bishopbriggs, Glasgow on Friday (March 6).

The centre is operated under a joint venture with TIGERS – a local training provider and employment broker which delivers Modern Apprenticeships within the construction and utilities industry.

Last year the joint venture recruited 130 apprentices who are working towards their apprenticeship framework completion through the partner arrangement with businesses and Carillion’s extensive supply chain.

During the visit, Ms Swinson met with training centre staff and was briefed on the courses available at the centre and got to chat to some of the current apprentices.

Chris James, Carillion Training Services Operations Director said: “We were pleased to be able to host a visit by Ms Swinson and provide an insight into how Carillion is helping to provide the skilled workforce of the future for the construction industry.

John Gibson, Managing Director, TIGERS said: “We are delighted this joint venture has created many apprenticeship opportunities for young people within a growth industry and can assist in meeting the well forecasted skills shortage.”

Ms Swinson said: “Research published last week highlighted that apprentices can earn up to £4000 more than those who have not undertaken an apprenticeship. Apprenticeships are no longer regarded as the option for those who are less academic but instead young people are voting with their feet and actively taking them up. “I welcome the work that Carillion TIGERS has done in my constituency to make this possible. I was particularly impressed by the enthusiasm and determination of those apprentices that I met last week and I wish them well in their future careers.”

Nationally Carillion operates 13 training centres and is the UK’s largest private sector provider of construction apprentices. Apprentices can ‘earn-while-they-learn’ and are offered work placements with Carillion’s extensive supply chain where they gain first-hand experience of working in the industry. Carillion has committed to creating 5,000 apprenticeships in construction trades over the next five years.
